Murphy & Nye

Murphy&Nye and sailing: a historic relationship dating back to the last century, when in 1933 Jim Murphy and Harry Nye Jr founded their sails manufacturing company in Chicago, specializing in pleasure boats sails. Shortly, they became renowned for their cutting-edge technologies mainly in manufacturing sails for scows sailing the big lakes and battened sails for ice boats sailing frozen lakes in winter. Lynn Williams – owner of yacht Elisabeth and M&N’s first client for big dimension sails - won the historic Mackinac Race in Lake Michigan in 1933 thanks to these high-performing sails. Year after year the involvement of Murphy&Nye in the world of regattas got more and more intense, in that in 1937 Milton Wegerfurth won the Star championship using M&N sails. In the ’60s Murphy&Nye was one of the most important sailing companies in the United States and in 1975 it opened the European branch office in Italy. It was such a great success, that in 1980 M&N Europe acquired the brand from the American parent company. At the same time, the company decided to optimise its know-how in regatta sails manufacturing to produce clothing for yacht crews. This line of high-tech garments was manufactured by craftsmen in the same sails-producing factories and perfectly answered the needs of toughness and functionality that crews required. The success obtained by these garments made the brand launch the Murphy&Nye Sailwear some years later and the “Newport” historic garments – reps cotton pants – whose name recalled the famous location of the most prestigious and antique regatta in the world: the America’s Cup. The America’s Cup also became an important moment for the visibility of the Murphy&Nye brand when, in the historic 1992 edition, the M&N Sailwear line was chosen as official supplier of the Moro di Venezia team captained by Paul Cayard. It was the first time a non-English speaking boat disputed the America’s Cup and Murphy&Nye was on board this boat for an unforgettable adventure. After this resounding success, M&N continued to be the reference point for the most important worldwide sailing teams of the America’s Cup: from Swiss Challenger – in 2000 – to Le Delfi Challenger and Team New Zealand – in 2002/2003. Since 2005, besides from being Exclusive Supplier of Emirates Team New Zealand and of United Internet Team Germany, M&N has also been chosen by the organisers of the America’s Cup to design and produce the official Men’s, Women’s and Children official collections with the brand “32nd America’s Cup”, through a worldwide exclusive three-year license. Again in 2005 the brand signed a co-marketing agreement with Pershing, Ferretti Group, for the production of the Murphy&Nye Power Collection and supported Giovanni Soldini in his famous solo expeditions. It was then the turn of the important partnerships with Nautor’s Swan – prestigious Finnish shipyard producing Swan sailing boats - for which M&N supplied customized clothing to all staff competing in regattas and participating to various events and shows. Finally Murphy&Nye Crew starts 2010 with an extremely important partnership: the agreement with Azzurra, team of skipper Francesco Bruni participating to the forthcoming Louis Vuitton Trophy (currently the most important sailing event). The team will wear garments of the Murphy&Nye Crew collection in Auckland/NZ during the Louis Vuitton Trophy Auckland (scheduled from 9th to 21st March) and the Louis Vuitton Trophy La Maddalena (from 22nd May to 6th June). As far as company organisation, in 1993 M&N entered Sixty SpA (Made in Italy colossus with a production of approximately 2,2 million garments per year), which takes care of the brand’s re-launch in the five continents. As of 1998 the company started on a very ambitious retail program with the opening of the first flagship store in Rome. The opening of over 120 stores in all the main European and the most prestigious tourist locations worldwide followed: Athens, Hamburg, Singapore, Dubai, London, Venice, Cannes, Dusseldorf, Florence, Lanzarote, Milan, Paris, Porto Cervo, Sylt, Taormina, Torbole sul Garda, Bologna. Murphy&Nye today represents an international company undergoing constant development thanks to its extreme dynamism and to its products, the result of a constant technological and quality research getting more and more popular with both professional and amateur sailors and end users..
